Vikings Futsal began in 1992, when a meeting of the Logan City Futsal Club decided to call their national league team the Logan City Vikings. Today Vikings are at the forefront of futsal management and development. Vikings operate around 100 clubs, with another 30 affiliated across Australasia, have 50 full-time and 150 part-time staff. It also has affiliates in Brazil, Chile, USA, China, UK and the Philippines.
The game first originated in Uruguay in 1930 when an Argentine coach by the name of Juan Carlos Ceriani fed up having the cancel training sessions due to rain took the game indoors. At the same time in Brazil, a similar game was being played in Sao Paolo. The game moved through South America like wildfire and eventually across the globe. Futsal can now be found in most countries being played by both genders and all age groups.
The game is played on a playing surface marked out by lines, roughly the size of a basketball court. The team consists of five players on the court at one time including the goalkeeper. The ball used is significantly smaller and heavier than that of a regular football ball and thus develops a high level of ball control and quick feet within those who regularly play the game.
Game times can vary from 13 minutes a half to 25 minutes depending on the age group and level at which the game is played.
